WHAT IS AN ARTIST-PULLED PRINT?An artist-pulled fine print is an original work of art, not a copy of another work. A print is an image that is created on one surface (the matrix) to be transferred to another surface (usually a piece of paper.) They are multiple originals. It is standard practice for an artist to indicate the number of prints in a particular edition and to number each print in sequence. For instance, 7/30 indicates that this is the seventh impression pulled from an edition of 30 prints. WHY I MAKE PRINTSI make prints because in using the plates, tools and technology, I can produce work that cannot be done by any other means. I am awed by the unique textural characteristics of prints. In the words of Gabor Peterdi, one of the outstanding twentieth-century printmakers, “… I am interested in printmaking, not as a means of reproduction, but as an original, creative medium. Even if I could pull only one print from each of my plates, I would still make them.” Brent Haddock For a wonderful explanation of printmaking |
